Lefty committed to the BMW Championship simply to keep his options open, but he told several people that he does not want to be away from home in Southern California for 12 days and the chances are he will skip the tournament at Cog Hill.
His 31 on the back nine in the final round last week in the Deutsche Bank Championship was his best golf since his wife and mother were diagnosed with breast cancer in July, so the competitive side of him probably would love to play in the Chicago-area event.
Mickelson got hot with the putter down the stretch and collected five birdies on the last seven holes, including the last three in a row, to close out a 5-under-par 66 and finish in a tie for 27th. That dropped him only two spots to 12th in the standings but left him with an outside chance to capture the FedEx Cup, especially if he plays this week in the BMW.
Mickelson has played the tournament 11 times previously but has not had much success at Cog Hill. He never has finished in the top 25 on the Dubsdread Course, where his best result was a tie for 26th in 1996. He tied for 17th when the event moved to Bellerive last year, after he skipped the third event of the PGA Tour playoffs two years ago. Last week at the TPC of Boston, Mickelson also had a 68 in round two and posted his best finish since he tied for second in the U.S. Open at Bethpage Black in June.
