Mickelson is satisfied with his performance

World number three Phil Mickelson insists he is satisfied with his ball-striking this year and feels once he has regained his confidence with the putter he should be challenging for titles once again.

"It takes a lot of momentum out of you when you keep hitting it to eight, 10, 12 feet and you keep missing the putts," he explained ahead of Thursday's first round at TPC Scottsdale.

"I'll get that turned around. I know that when I got it turned around last year things started falling in place. I don't feel like it's far off."

Asked to assess his season so far which, along with the eighth place at Pebble Beach, has yielded finishes of 19th and joint 45th, he responded: "They weren't what I had hoped for.

"But they gave me a good idea of what I need to work on for the near term and the rest of the year. I'm starting to hit the ball very well."

Mickelson has been a regular at the Phoenix Open since competing for the first time as an amateur in 1989, and emerged victorious in both 1996 and 2005.

Always a favourite with fans, he is received particularly well at TPC Scottsdale's infamous par-three 16th - the noisiest hole in golf (discount golf equipment).

"The last few holes here always provide a feeling we don't get at other tour events and it's really special now with 16 essentially surrounded by seating," he added.

This week the event will also boast a strong European contingent with Justin Rose, world number eight Martin Kaymer, big-hitting Spaniard Alvaro Quiros and also Ian Poulter all teeing it up.

Poulter is fresh from his superb victory at last week's Accenture Match Play Championship with his TaylorMade Burner TP Driver and heads into the event at a career-high ranking of five in the world.

And he is hoping to find his touch on the greens when he returns to Arizona for this week's Waste Management Phoenix Open. In his opinion, the putters will heats up soon.
