Five rock the East Lake

After the storm’s influence, the East Lake Golf Club has welcome The Tour Championship. In 2008, 30 of the best golf players around the world gathered here for the $10 million bonus. The scene is the same, while the situation is different.

To make certain The Tour Championship wouldn't lack for drama this year, the numbers crunchers at PGA Tour headquarters formulated its third points system in as many years to give every one of the 30 players a mathematical chance to win the $10 million. 

Has it ever. Five players — Woods, Steve Stricker, Jim Furyk, Zach Johnson and Heath Slocum— automatically  win the $10 million bonus with a victory; all 25 others have hope. Padraig Harrington, sixth in the standings a year after not making it to The Tour Championship despite winning two majors, can win the grand prize with a victory as long as Woods doesn't finish solo second. Sean O'Hair, currently seventh, can win it all with a victory if Woods and Stricker finish third or worse. Scott Verplank, in eighth place, needs a win and for Woods, Stever Stricker and Furyk to finish anywhere but runner-up.

"Last year Vijay hit his first tee shot, and it was already over," said Tiger Woods, who won the inaugural playoffs in 2007 but missed the 2008 postseason because of knee surgery. "The Tour wants to have excitement at the last event, and that's ultimately what has happened."
