The Correct Hand Position for Your Golf Swing
Golf swing is a key point to scale your scores. Getting in the right position and having a strong grip won't assure that you become a good player, but not having the correct grip will almost guarantee that you won't become a decent player. The basic grip and getting your hands in the correct position may feel awkward at first, but you will soon grow comfortable with your new grip.
Step 1 Take your left hand and put it at the top of the golf club's grip. Put the small finger of your right hand in between the forefinger and middle finger of your right hand. Make sure your thumbs align down the shaft of the club. This is called the overlapping grip and it is the the most popular way to put your hands in the correct position to play golf.
Step 2 Put the club in your left hand again. Take the small finger of your right hand and put it underneath the forefinger of your left hand. Your thumbs need to be in alignment down the shaft of the club. This is the interlocking grip, and it allows a golfer to get more power when he holds the club.
Step 3 Hold the golf club in your left hand. Put your right hand directly underneath it. You are holding the club as if it were a baseball bat. It's no surprise that this is called the baseball grip. Your thumbs do not need to align with this grip. If you are holding the club the way you would hold a baseball bat, then you are holding it correctly.
Step 4 Hold the club at about a "5" on a scale of 1 to 10. Squeeze the club firmly enough so that it does not wobble or spin on contact with the ball. If you hold it any tighter, you won't be able to get the ease of movement and full rotation that you need.
Step 5 Go to the driving range and try the overlapping grip, the interlocking grip and the baseball grip. Hit 10 balls with each to determine which is the most comfortable.
