Paul Creamer Is Worried About The Tour's Second Major

07/08/2009

The players of the LPGA Tour have called on their Tour Commissioner, Carol Bivens, to resign, according to media reports circulating in the US and elsewhere.

This, the reports claim, because the majority of the players have lost confidence in Bivens, who replaced Ty Votaw as LPGA commissioner in September 2005 when he left to join the PGA Tour.

Mexican world number one Lorena Ochoa and highly-ranked American Paula Creamer were among the group of players who met last week to voice strong concerns over the health of the LPGA Tour in the face of the world-wide economic downturn, Golfweek magazine reported on Monday.

The meeting was held during the Jamie Farr Owens Corning Classic last week and it is reported that the upshot was that a letter was sent to the LPGA's board of directors urging Bivens to step down and requesting that new leadership be installed.

According to the Golfweek report, up to 15 LPGA players attended the meeting in Toledo, Ohio, but the magazine did not name which or if any of those had signed the letter calling for Bivens to resign.

The LPGA could not immediately be reached for comment by Reuters or other members of the media.

The fact that the LPGA Tour has lost seven tournaments since 2007, including all three in Hawaii, and right now are without a sponsors or a venue for one of their major, the LPGA Championship, is clearly the major cause of concern among the players.

Creamer, in the meantime was clearly worried about the fact that next year the LPGA will have to take ownership of the LPGA Championship, the second major of the season - and find a new venue.
