To build top golf course, you must consider the size of it.

In eyeballing 2010, of the 46 tournaments on the schedule, 12 are what can accurately be called limited-field events -- those that trim the number of entrants by choice, not because of reduced daylight hours. Most are short-field invitationals of 120 players or WGC stops with even fewer entries.

Enough is enough. Or, rather, too little is too much. As evidenced by Heath Slocum's clutch victory at The Barclays, where he was the second-to-last man to qualify for the 125-man field, and the upset by Y.E. Yang at the PGA Championship, depth is a crucially important component in this age. No. 150 can beat No. 1 in a given week.

Woods won six times last year, which is a terrific accomplishment, but five of the wins came against WGC or invitational-sized fields of 120 players or fewer. In the global age, nobody can say that just beating the "elite" fields was a tougher task than fending off the broader constituency.

Would remaking the first three FedEx Cup events into full-field events be such a travesty? You can still keep the points tally on the side, but everybody plays.
