"I just told the guys to look forward and don't look back," Greg Norman said of his mid-round conversations with his team.
"You just have to get that momentum going. Just get a bit of momentum, mojo, and it's going to go your way. I'm extremely proud of them, coming back the way they did."
The diminutive Clark provided the International team with its biggest jolt, curling in a 20-foot eagle putt on the final hole to snag a 1-up win against U.S. Open champ Lucas Glover and British Open champ Stewart Cink.
"I was pretty calm when I had to stand over it, but we were pretty safe on that hole," Clark said. "We couldn't lose the hole, which was a good thing. Vijay and I just played well and we pulled it out."
Els and Weir earned a seesaw 2-up win against Jim Furyk and Anthony Kim. Els, who is 2-0-0 this week, made a clutch 15-footer for birdie on the 17th hole to put his team 1 up. Weir closed it out with a conceded birdie on the final hole.
"We watched the board a little bit and we knew all of the matches were within one or two except for a couple of them," Weir said. "So we knew if we could turn it around, we could get back in it. There was a lot of golf left to play. Ernie played better than what he will tell you. He played fine, and he burned the edge on a lot of putts, so it was good to see that one go in on 17th when we really needed it. As they say, we ham-and-egged it, just back and forth and I made a couple and Ernie made a couple."
The Americans remain confident despite Friday's finish.
"I think at one point we were up in five matches, so we are probably wishing we would have got another point or so out of it," Justin Leonard said. "But still, it was a solid afternoon, and we got a lot of guys that are playing well.
"Tomorrow is obviously a big day with 10 points available, and so hopefully we are hopeful to have a good day and see if we can have a cushion going into Sunday."
They probably will if Tiger Woods and Stricker remain in fine form. The two, as they were in Thursday's 6-and-4 win against Geoff Ogilvy and Ryo Ishikawa, were a buzz saw in a 5-and-3 rout of Ogilvy and Angel Cabrera. The two International players had asked to play Woods and Stricker and learned exactly what the adage, "Be careful what you ask for," means. Woods and Stricker, who have yet to reach the 16th hole in either of their two matches, combined for five birdies and never trailed, building a 3-up lead at the turn.
"It's been a lot of fun and hopefully we continue with it, and it was a good day," Steve Stricker said. "We helped each other out along the way, and Tiger played great coming down the stretch as always."
Woods made clutch pars on the final three holes to close out the match.
"I think Steve and I gel well together," Woods said. "And in this format you have to make a bunch of birdies and we did for most of the day."
