Now 27th in the world - he was 396th when he took advantage of Thomas Bjorn's collapse from three ahead with four to play - Curtis matched early clubhouse leader Tom Watson's 65 on the opening day at Turnberry.
The two Americans are among the few debutants to have won The Open.
After four birdies in the last six holes Curtis said: "To go out there and shoot that number, when to be honest I was just hoping to find a fairway, I'm surprised a little bit.
"I just love playing links golf, knowing that you have to control your irons pretty well and just keep the ball out of those fairway bunkers and manage your way around the golf course.
"I'd like to think if I was in this position heading into Sunday that I'd be able to handle it well and be able to go out there and play well."
Royal St George's was the first links course he had ever played and he reflected: "You look back on it and you have to pinch yourself every now and then to realise that, 'Hey, I won the biggest tournament in the world on the first try".
